Electrical Safety Around Water: Top 5 Tips

Summer is the season for outdoor activities and play – and lots of swimming! Whether you’re in a hot tub, pool, or lake, it’s important to always remember to practice electrical safety when around water. Here are the top 5 tips to be aware of before you throw on your bathing suit for the first time this season.

1. Never Swim During A Storm

Do you see a storm brewing on the horizon? Make sure to immediately remove yourself from the pool or hot tub immediately. When lightning strikes water, it conducts electricity. That’s why it’s never safe to swim during a thunderstorm. By continuing to swim during a storm, you risk being struck by lightning, which could seriously injure or even kill you.

2. Have Your Pool Regularly Inspected By A Professional

Have your pool inspected by a professional electrician at least once a year. This will help ensure you stay safe when you go to use it every summer. During the inspection, the electrician will thoroughly examine the inner workings of your pool and determine whether or not it’s safe to use. If you have faulty wiring, for example, they’ll be able to check it out and repair it as necessary. Not only that, but they’ll also make sure it’s GFCI-protected, compliant to code, and energy efficient.

3. Don’t Touch Electronics While Wet

Whether your hands are wet from washing them or you just got out of the pool, make sure you dry off completely before touching electronics. It’s important to remember that water and electricity never mix. No matter what the device is, whether it’s a charging cell phone or a radio, never touch them while you’re still wet.

4. Don’t Swim In or Near A Marina

You are at a higher risk of Electric Shock Drowning (ESD) when you swim in or near a marina. ESD occurs when electricity from a boat or dock leaks into the surrounding waters. If you get shocked while in the water, it can be deadly. Don’t take that risk, and stay away from marinas entirely.

5. Avoid Swimming With Faulty Underwater Lights

If you’re swimming and happen to notice the underwater lights are flickering, working intermittently, or not working as they should, don’t ignore it. It’s important you stop swimming immediately as this is an indication of an electrical issue.
